On Sunday, I went to the season opening of the New Amsterdam Market located under the FDR Drive near the South Street Seaport. It highlighted many purveyors of artisanal breads, cheeses, jams, syrups, and chocolates. At the Sullivan Street Bakery stand, we bought a loaf of charred bread that was a match for that served at one of my favorite restaurants, Sfoglia. I literally went through the market lunching on samples like a mini cucumber and cheddar on pumpernickel tea sandwich. If I hadn’t had my lunch through freebies I would have bought one of the crab sandwiches that tasted like Maine. Wandering the rows of the market I came across some truly unique vendors.
I originally found People’s Pops at the Chelsea Market, but at the time it was too cold to try. Now, People’s Pops were just the treat I was looking for on a blazing hot Sunday. Although they are cool (and by cool, I mean the pop stuck to my tongue), you won’t find any simple favors like lemon or grape. Instead, People’s Pops offers Strawberry Rhubarb, Apricot Chamomile, and my choice, Raspberry Basil. But those were just their pops. They also shaved ices, prepared to order, in flavors like Pear or Sour Cherry, which my mom got.
Yummy Mozzarella Bialys!
Last week I was watching a program about Mast Brothers chocolate on The Cooking Channel, a rival to The Food Network. Although I’ve had Mast Brothers chocolate before, I never realized that they design the papers they use to hand-wrap the chocolates themselves. They scour places like Ecuador and Madagascar for the best cacao beans to use in their Williamsburg store and are one of the only American chocolatiers to craft chocolate from bean to bar. Not only is the artisanal chocolate incredibly delicious, but I also I secretly love the brothers’ facial hair--It was great to see them represented at the market.
